Reception

Hi year R! This week I have done a quick recap of how to use your 'Fred fingers' to help you spell out words to write sentences! Remember your sentence mantra and sound mat if you forget how to write the sounds.
This week in maths we are learning to estimate, which means to make a sensible guess. This can be quite tricky as you can't count! You have to use what you know about numbers and what amounts look like. In the video I've used my hands to help me compare amounts to help me make sensible estimates (guesses). Have a go and see how you get on.
On a side note, Walt was so happy to finally make an appearance!
Happy Monday Year R! I hope you have had a lovely weekend. I have two new math lessons talking about subtraction (this first video) and doubling (second video. These videos will help aid you in your math learning this week and refresh your memory on the methods we used to solve each problem.

Sorry for the late captions with the videos, there were a few technical difficulties!
Have fun and I hope you enjoy both or maths and Talk4Writing work this week.
Hi Year R, we have another math lesson learning about coin value. This addresses the misconception that small coins means small value.
I use numicon to help you understand that coin size doesn't matter when you look at the value of a coin.

Have fun!
This week we are practising our phonic skills. In this video you  need to spot and read red words as well as spotting consonant blends, double letters, digraphs and trigraphs to read different green words.
I recommend watching this video a few times and pausing it if you need to!
Hi Year R! This week we are getting into problem solving. This means you need to use what you already know about numbers, shape and patterns to work out and solve answers. Remember you explain to your adults the 'how' and 'why'. For example: 'How did you work it out?' 'What did you do to work it out?' 'Why do you think that?' 'Can you explain to your adults what you did?'

Have fun!
We are covering one of my favourite topics - poems and rhyming words this week!
Have lots of fun exploring rhyme! Maybe you could teach your adults some of the poems (if you can remember them) you have learnt in school like 'yum time' 'Beware' 'Woolly mammoth' and 'Hey let's go!

I hope you have loads of fun this week learning about and exploring rhyme.

Here is the maths activity sheets for weeks 2-6. Week 1 has already been printed for you and are in your home learning packs already.
Good morning year R, happy Monday! I have another video which will support your talk4writing learning. The video is a re-telling of the story you will be learning throughout this English unit. You can watch this as many times as you like, I hope you enjoy it!
Hello everyone, I hope you are all safe and happy. Hopefully you have all been able to collect your child's home learning pack that contained maths and English work. This is a short video that serves as a short of introduction to your child's English learning based upon the talk4writing principles. The video contains rhymes that your child will have already learnt in school to help them remember basic story patterns and rhyme. They can practise and re-watch the video as much as they like, I hope you all enjoy.

Good afternoon everyone and another beautiful, sunshiny day! I can't believe the beautiful weather we are having at the moment but I am thoroughly enjoying it. I hope you are all safe and happy. I hope you are all busy exploring, having fun and learning new things with your family.
I thought I would share some useful websites with you what have a lot of games you can play which also help with your learning (win win).
1. Phonics play - a great way to practise and apply blending skills to identify real and silly words.  It has silly music and pictures and has never failed to make children giggle. I recommend choosing phase 3 and phase 4. Please not this follows the 'Letters and sounds' programme and not 'RWInc' so some of the sounds may be unfamiliar, however most of them are okay.
2. NRICH - is a fantastic mathematics site that has a lot of ideas for games that develop key mathematical concepts for children in fun and interactive ways. It also helps children learn how to apply what they know to problem solve. I absolutely love this site and I use a lot of the ideas in my own teaching so I highly recommend it.
3. Top Marks - full of fun games specifically designed for early years (and all key stages). Really fun and cover a wide range of topics and concepts.

Good morning everyone on this beautiful, sunny Monday morning. I hope everyone had a lovely bank holiday weekend and enjoyed the glorious sunshine we were blessed with Friday and Saturday. I managed to get some more gardening done (pulling out ALL of the weeds!).
Today is a new week and there are new challenges and learning materials on Purple Mash. I have provided a video below explaining one of the maths 2do's as it requires you to apply your counting skills in a new way that not even I have come across. This video explains how you can apply your counting skills and explains the 2do in more detail. I'm sorry about the brightness at times, the early morning sun was just saying hello.
If you need any help at all or have any questions just reply in the comment section on our new YR blog page on purple mash and I can respond directly to you. I hope this video helps!

Hello everyone! I can't believe we are in May already, the time has both flown by and felt really slow all at once. I have had such a lovely week, the best part was seeing the amazing video made by our wonderful PTA, it was such a beautiful video and it absolutely brought tears of joy to my eyes. I've received lots of photos and messages showing all the learning you have been getting up to and your achievements (almost being able to ride a bike without stabilisers... I am SO impressed and proud!). Every piece of news, picture and message I get from you guys keeps me going and never fails to brighten up my day. Also well done to all the hard work I am seeing on Purple Mash as well. Keep it up everyone.
I have been busy, busy, busy with lots of teacher work but I have also been enjoying the weather and have been dipping my toes into the world of gardening. I've just finished planting some wild flowers outside my house and I am excited to see what sprouts out and grows in the next few weeks.
Okay, challenge time and it is another one for outside (because we may never get beautiful weather like this again for another year!) I saw something similar online and thought it looked so fun that I had to share it with you guys.
I used different colours on a plain piece of paper, I then went outside to try and find natural materials to colour match the colours on the page. It is basically a colour hunt! I made it harder by adding in different tones of the same colour.
Can you go on your own colour hunt? You will see mine isn't finished yet, I need to go on my long walk either day or tomorrow to see if I can find anything blue and red.
This has been really fun so far and something that I feel will take me a while to achieve, which makes my walks even more interesting because I have to make sure I am looking out for different coloured natural materials. Have a go and see if you can fill up all the colours! (Your choice of colours can be different to mine).

Hello everyone! I have created a little recap maths video about addition and subtraction specifically relating to the purple mash 2do on 1 less this week. The video contains one method you can use in order to help you solve the 1 less problems independently and the pictures I will post show another method you can use. Remember, it is about using and applying knowledge you already know about subtraction and number order that we have learnt together in school.
Let me know if videos like this help you with your home learning in the comment section in purple mash (once you have completed anyone 2dos you can leave a comment for me where it says 'I have finished') and I will create more video content if and when it is needed! Enjoy the rain today, I have my raincoat and wellies ready.

Method 2: Using objects to count out the amount you need and take 1 away, count how many is left to find your answer

Hello everybody, I hope you all had a lovely weekend and enjoyed the sunshine. It is currently sunny outside but the weather forecast doesn't look promising for this week...
Well done to all of you completing lots of 2 do's on Purple Mash and completing some of your new home learning activities. I have received some pictures of all your amazing work and it continues to brighten up my days. I also know that lots of you have been really creative and have done a lot of your own learning and work as well, which is absolutely fantastic and I am so proud of you all. I have also noticed that lots of you are spreading little acts of kindness to your friends and neighbours, which is just lovely to hear about.
I have been thinking hard about what sort of challenge to set you and I think I have found a good one.
Your challenge (if you choose to accept it) is to write WITHOUT using pens, pencils, chalk, crayons or anything you would typically use to write with.
You can write anything you like your name, numbers, sounds you know, messages... but you cannot use any writing implement, using your problem solving skills instead to come up with another method.
In the pictures below I used natural materials, you may want to do something similar or come up with a different method, it is up to you! You can upload any pictures you take on Purple Mash for me to see and comment on.
Put your thinking caps on and I can't wait to see what you come up with!

Good morning everyone! I hope everyone has had a fantastic week, it was actually my birthday on Wednesday so I have been eating home made birthday cake (very yummy indeed). Well done to all of you who have been going onto purple mash. I have loved seeing all the hard work you have been doing. I have also loved the pictures you have been sending me via purple mash of the excellent home learning you have been getting up to! Those pictures and videos really make my day and bring a big smile to my face.
Whilst I have been busy doing all of my teacher work I have also spent my free time reading. I absolutely love to read (as you know, my favourite part of the day at school is story time) and I have been reading some of my favourites. I recently came across 'Jasper's Beanstalk' by Nick Butterworth and Mick Inkpen and decided I would do my own story map of the story to help me retell it. My challenge to you is can you create a story map of one of your favourite stories? Can you retell the story to an adult, brother or sister? Why is it you favourite book? Who is your favourite character and why?
I think Jasper's beanstalk is one of my favourites because Jasper tries so hard to look after his bean but then mows it down! Which is hilarious and always makes me giggle. If you are not familiar with the book, I highly recommend it!

Hello everyone! I hope you had a lovely Easter holiday and ate far too much chocolate. I have had a lovely restful break and I am ready to work hard. I cannot wait to see all the wonderful activities you have been getting up to and marking your wonderful work on Purple Mash. I have already marked some fantastic work from you already, well done! I am super impressed.
I really enjoy going on my daily walks and I know a lot of you also love going on your walks as well. I have loved all of the inventive chalk drawings, hop scotch and courses children have drawn all over. When I come across one when I am doing my walk I always do it and I get such joy from it. Recently the lovely children on our road created a massive 'ultimate challenge' chalk course. I filmed myself doing it for you to have a little watch. I wonder if you can create a chalk course? or drawing. If you don't have chalk can you find one on your next walk and do it? How did it make you feel? I would love to know if you enjoy them as much as I do.

Hello everyone! I thought I would start the day off with cake. I hope you had a wonderful Easter and ate far too much chocolate and had lots of fun doing lots of Easter activities (or just completely relaxing on the sofa watching TV and movies). Just a little note to you all on what I have been getting up to during this Easter holiday and how I have found ways to relax (watching Disney movies on the sofa *Moana, Frozen...* has definitely been my go-to) . I have been going on walks around the area that I live, exploring different routes and observing all the different flowers and wildlife popping up over the spring time. I have also been getting to know my neighbours a little more by sending notes and baking cakes to cheer people up and generally to check that everyone is okay. From these small acts of kindness I have received beautiful pictures outside of my house and posted through my letter box from the children on my road. It has given me so much joy! So, if you would like to spread a little joy and receive joy in return, you can make someone a beautiful picture (you lot are AMAZING at drawing and creating beautiful pieces of artwork). Write little notes or carry on the rainbow trend (if you haven't already). I have also noticed lots of new make shift hop scotch being created by children and adults and it has been so much fun doing all of them on my daily walks! (A great way to spread joy if you have chalk). Obviously there is no pressure to do any of this, this is just what I've been doing to help myself feel happy and calm. I hope you all have a lovely, calm and relaxing rest of your holiday x
3.04.20
Hello everyone and what would have been the last day at school before the holidays. It is rather gloomy outside but that hasn't stopped me from working hard. I normally love the holidays because I get to relax and do some of the activities that relax and calm me down, activities that I don't usually have time for. I love colouring and have LOTS of colouring books. My favourites are: 'Enchanted Forest' by Johanna Basford and 'Colour and Art Therapy' colouring book series, which lets you create your own patterns. I find that these sorts of activities really help me chill out and relax and I can spend hours doodling and colouring in. Now, I know that you all LOVE to draw and colour  because when we are at school Mrs Hunt and I have to constantly keep the paper topped up! So, because it is the start of the holidays and it's that time to relax and take some time for ourselves I decided to create my own picture, inspired by a wellness activity I saw. I drew my favourite place in the whole world - a beach!
I wonder if you can draw your own happy place? Where is it? What does it look like? Is anyone in your happy place?
You can also grab a colouring book and colour in your favourite page instead. Just take some time (adults included) to do an activity you enjoy today.
Have a wonderful holiday and stay safe x
1.04.20
Happy April everyone! It's that time of year again when we all eat far too much chocolate (I know I will). Even though we are going through a tricky time we can still celebrate all that Easter embodies: new life, new beginnings and hope.
Because it is almost Easter, I decided to create my own natural Easter eggs made out of all the beauty God created, leaves, pebbles and any wild flowers and greenery I could find right outside my house. My challenge to you is for you to also create a leaf Easter egg using only natural materials that you find. It could be things you find in your garden or when you go out for a walk this week, just make sure it is natural!
Don't forget you can post your pictures of your Easter egg leaves on purple mash for me to see. I love seeing all the amazing work and learning you have been doing. I have seen some amazing monsters being created, excellent post cards being written and some amazing phonics and maths work going on. Keep it up everyone! You are doing fantastically well and I am so proud of you all x

31.03.20
Good morning year R, it is a very beautiful, sunny kind of day today and I am smiling. Did you know that you can upload pictures of all the learning and activities you have been getting up to on purple mash!? I had a lovely surprise yesterday when I saw some wonderful pictures of one child sharing some awesome learning they had done, making puppets, planting seeds and baking cakes. I was so happy to receive these pictures (as I really miss you all) and it put a massive smile on my face. If you have any photos or pictures of learning you would like to share with me then just upload them onto purple mash. I would love to see more and share your learning with you!

Okay, now onto what I have been getting up to today. So this morning I thought to myself... I wish my teddies could talk, what would they say to me if they could talk? Well I decided to make them speech bubbles and write what I think they would say. I have written up instructions for you so you can try this at home and make your favourite teddies and toys talk!
P.s there is even a 'motivational one' for my lovely fiance, Orr, to help him with his work... he seemed rather unimpressed.

Hello everyone, I hope you are all safe and sound and happy. The creator of 'ReadWriteInc' phonics Ruth Miskin is doing free daily online phonics lessons for children to access. Here is her home learning page link with all the information on and quick links to the phonics pages: https://www.ruthmiskin.com/en/find-out-more/help-during-school-closure/
Your child will need the set 2 daily speed sounds at 10am and any recap of set 1 at 9 if they would like!

I have already had a busy morning sorting out a problem with my teddies. I woke up to them arguing over who gets the pens to colour in first. I didn't know how to solve this problem so I thought you could help.
Using your own teddies can you share 10 pens fairly between 4 of your favourite toys? How many will each toy get? Are there any remainders? Good luck!
Extra challenge - my teddies decided to write sorry cards to each other for not being very kind. They are finding it a bit tricky... they have started off well. Can you create a sorry card for them and fill in the blanks?
26.03.20
Hi again everyone! Today I have been very busy doing all my teacher work but I still managed to sneak in a little time for making my own story map of Rosie's Walk by Pat Hutchins. I love this story because it is simple but funny with the fox getting into all sorts of trouble. I've put the picture of my story map below. Can you create your own story map of your favourite story? I might even write a little poem about the poor old fox!

A Message from Miss Hockley
Hello everyone! I hope you are all keeping yourselves safe and sound during this time and being helpful and kind to your family. Just because I am not with you does not mean I have forgotten about you all! I will be using this page to post about what I have been up to, any cool ideas and activities you can try out at home and any extra challenges you can do to help you with your learning. These will either be videos, pictures or just me writing to you.

Something I do want to share with you is a website called ABC does, by Alistair Bryce-Clegg. Anyone who knows me well will know I am a huge fan! On his blog page he has created a network between EYFS professionals all sharing fun activities you can do at home!
